TALLAHASSEE – Mikyla Tolivert scored a career-high 16 points and Georgia State rallied from a double-digit deficit before falling to Florida State 75-70 at the Donald L. Tucker Center Sunday afternoon.
Playing in her home state, Tolivert scored 11 of her 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the first half. The sophomore from Melbourne also dished out a career-high five assists and shot 7-for-8 at the free throw line.
Deasia Merrill added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting with five rebounds off the bench. Tampa, Fla., native Nyla Jean scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Tehya Lyons finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and freshman Zay Dyer grabbed 11 rebounds to lead all Panthers.
Playing against an ACC opponent for the second straight game, Georgia State trailed by as many as 19 points before outscoring the Seminoles 20-9 in the fourth quarter to pull within five with 54 seconds left to play. A steal by Jenae Dublin with 30 seconds left gave GSU a chance to pull even closer, but the Panthers failed to capitalize as FSU forced a missed layup by Merrill and a turnover to seal the game.
Georgia State outrebounded FSU 44-42 and held the Seminoles to just 35.5 percent shooting and 7-of-29 (24.1 percent) from three-point range. It is the second straight game the Panthers have held an ACC opponent to under 36 percent after limiting Georgia Tech to 32.7 percent from the field at McCamish Pavilion Thursday night.
GSU made five of their first eight baskets to open the game and shot 9-of-17 in the first quarter. They trailed 24-20 before scoring eight of the first 10 points in the second quarter to take a 28-26 lead and trailed 38-36 at the half before FSU used a 17-2 run to take a 19 point lead in the third.
The Panthers will conclude their three-game road trip at Florida A&M on Tuesday, November 15 at 12 p.m.
