Goals by Carlson, Jones Help Panthers Secure Win over Liberty

ATLANTA— Entering the team's third consecutive home outing in Atlanta, midfielders Simon Carlson and Iolo Jones each registered goals in Sunday's match against Liberty to help Georgia State men's soccer defeat the Flames, 2-1.

Following a scoreless first half that saw the Panthers chart five shots, GSU finally found the back of the net with Carlson's unassisted goal in the 47th minute. The junior now ties teammate Max Wilkins for a team high in goals on the season with five.

GSU added to its lead in the 64th minute as Jones accounted for the team's second goal off an assist from midfielder Justin McLean. A graduate transfer joining the Panthers' roster for the 2022 season, Jones charts his first goal of the year with the score.

Following a late effort by Liberty that saw the Flames connect on a goal in the 88th minute, the Panthers closed the match and secured a ninth victory by a final count of 2-1. Goalkeeper Josue Hangi collected four saves on the day, and Carlson led the team in shots with a total of four.

GSU improves to 9-2-2 on the season with the win and currently sits at third in the Sun Belt behind No. 2 Kentucky and No. 4 Marshall.

The Panthers are back in action at the GSU Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 19 for a conference battle against fourth-ranked Marshall. The match is set to kick at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
