Meet the New Panthers: Tony McCray Jr.

With the start of the 2021 football season fast approaching, it's time to get to know Georgia State's class of newcomers that will join a GSU program that returns 22 starters from last year's bowl-winning squad.

Today's featured freshman is cornerback Tony McCray Jr.

McCray is a fast and explosive defensive back from from Clarksdale, Miss., where he was an all-state and all-district selection at Lake Cormorant High School. His senior season stats include 35 tackles, four interceptions, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He also collected 365 all-purpose yards, including 269 yards on kickoff returns.

McCray joins a cornerback room that features seniors Jaylon Jones and Quavian White, both three year starters, and also includes senior Tyler Gore, junior Courtney Williams and sophomores Bryquice Brown and Cameron Sims. The cornerbacks combined for five of Georgia State's 12 interceptions in 2020, helping the Panthers rank No. 10 in FBS with 21 turnovers forced.

Georgia State opens the season on Sept. 4, when the Panthers host Army at Center Parc Stadium in a noon kickoff on ESPNU. That kicks off the most exciting and challenging schedule in program history, including non-conference games at North Carolina and Auburn and a home date with Charlotte. In Sun Belt Conference play, the Panthers host Appalachian State, Texas State, Arkansas State and Troy while traveling to ULM, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina.
