Fearnley Becomes First CoSIDA Academic All-American in Program History

ATLANTA – Georgia State junior Matthew Fearnley became the first men's soccer player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® recognition as announced by the organization on Tuesday.

The awards recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Fearnley earned First-team Academic All-District® honors last month following a remarkable season on the pitch helping lead Georgia State to a sixth-straight conference tournament championship game appearance.

Fearnley, who is majoring in health and physical education, was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Scholar All-America Team as well as the United Soccer Coaches Association Scholar All-Region Team earlier this spring.

The junior earned All-Sun Belt recognition and helped guide the nations' most-prolific offense in the fall while tying for the team lead with five goals to go along with an assist. He led the nation with three game-winning goals in just 13 matches. Along with being tied for second in the NCAA in goals during the fall, he was second in the nation with 11 points, behind only teammate Aris Briggs who is now playing professionally.

Fearnley was named to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Team and twice named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week last season. He also drew a pair of honors on the College Soccer News Team of the Week as well as twice being named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.

Georgia State will report back to campus in early August to start preparations for the 2021 season.
