Our coaches are the driving forces behind Georgia State volleyball. Over the past several weeks, we have highlighted each coach leading up to the highly anticipated 2021 campaign through our three-part "Faces of GSU Volleyball" series. In the final segment of the series, we will highlight another key piece to the program, assistant coach Ashley Beyer.
Ashley Beyer was officially announced as an assistant coach for the Georgia State volleyball team on May 5, 2017 by head coach Sally Polhamus.
Beyer came to Georgia State after spending the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Hartford where she worked with the outside hitters, oversaw video exchange and analysis, assisted in recruiting and engineered the Hawks social media efforts. She also served as a camp coach for groups such as the Marquette Volleyball Camp, Illini Elite Camps and All-American Volleyball Camps.
"I have always wanted to move south and specifically live in Atlanta," said Beyer. "I was originally recruited by Sally (Polhamus) to play at Georgia Tech. I was committed to play there, then the head coach left and went to Marquette. Of course, I fell in love with Atlanta at a young age and always wanted to move back. When the opportunity became open for the assistant coach position here at Georgia State, I applied immediately. I fell in love with the city and Georgia State during my interview."
Since coming to Georgia State, Beyer has made her presence felt by overseeing all planning and booking associated with travel, while also being responsible for ordering the equipment that is provided to the players. Training wise, her specific focus is defense and serve receive. She takes pride in tracking what the opponents' offensive tendencies are so that she can prepare the team defensively.
"My favorite part about coaching at Georgia State is seeing the growth of our players throughout the years," said Beyer. "Living in a city, our players deal with more diversity than you normally would. I believe this prepares them for the challenges that they will come across once they graduate. At the end of the day, I love watching them overcome challenges on and off the court."
Beyer enjoyed a decorated playing career that involved three All-Big East recognitions as a Golden Eagle, including first team honors as a junior. She was named an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention in 2010, and led Marquette to its first NCAA Tournament victory over No. 24 Western Kentucky in her senior season. She also played a year at Kishwaukee College in Illinois, where she helped carry the team to its third-straight NJCAA National Championship and a 56-3 record. That same season she took home AVCA First Team All-America honors.
After her collegiate career ended, she played professionally from 2012-15 in Sweden and Switzerland. She also competed for Premier Volleyball League teams from Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio.
Last season, Beyer played a critical role in coaching Georgia State to victories in seven of it's last nine matches, which included a four-match winning streak. Going into the 2021 campaign, the Panthers will look to build upon that stretch.
