Volleyball Collects USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Georgia State court volleyball program achieved recognition from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Monday evening as one of 243 Division I teams to win the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.

The court volleyball squad has maintained its excellence in the classroom as head coach Sally Polhamus' team has won the award for five consecutive years.

The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award initiated during the 1992-93 academic year and is reserved for collegiate and high school volleyball teams (men/women, boys/girls, indoor/ beach) that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

"Working to be a championship team consists of many layers," said Polhamus. "The foundation of this is based on incredible discipline and hard work to achieve success in the classroom, on the court and in life. I could not be more proud of our players overcoming adversity, especially in a Covid year, to excel in the classroom. This reflects the true character of our team, the academic support from Georgia State and the work of our academic advisor, Jessica Summey. Our players are preparing themselves for an incredible career and success ahead."

During the spring semester, the court volleyball team had nine players earn academic honors as two players were named to the President's List (4.0 GPA), three players were named to the Dean's List (3.5-3.99 GPA) and four players were named to the Athletic Director's honor roll (3.0 or higher).
