Meet the New Panthers: Chris Davis Jr.

With the start of the 2021 football season fast approaching, it's time to get to know Georgia State's class of newcomers that will join a GSU program that returns 22 starters from last year's bowl-winning squad.

Today's featured freshman is outside linebacker Chris Davis Jr. from Tampa, Fla.

Davis put up some eye-popping numbers at Armwood High School. As a senior, he made 46 tackles, but 22 of them were behind the line of scrimmage, including 13 sacks. In his career, he collected 21 sacks and 34 tackles for loss.

The 6-3, 215-pounder brings those sack number to a Georgia State defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a school-record 35 sacks a year ago.

The GSU defense, which returns nine starters, also ranked No. 8 in the nation with 21 turnovers forced, tying the program record. The Panthers held opponents to 136.6 rushing yards per game, the second-best figure in school history, while setting a record for fewest yards per rush at 3.86.

Georgia State opens the season on Sept. 4, when the Panthers host Army at Center Parc Stadium in a noon kickoff on ESPNU. That kicks off the most exciting and challenging schedule in program history, including non-conference games at North Carolina and Auburn and a home date with Charlotte. In Sun Belt Conference play, the Panthers host Appalachian State, Texas State, Arkansas State and Troy while traveling to ULM, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina.
