The Elder Statesman

Anticipation is high for the 2021 football season as Georgia State returns 22 starters from last year's record-setting team and LendingTree Bowl champions.

Head coach Shawn Elliott's squad welcomes back all 11 starters from an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 33.3 points per game, nine starters from a GSU defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a program-record 35 sacks, and their placekicker and punter.

Each week leading up to the 2021 season opener on Sept. 4 vs. Army at Center Parc Stadium, GeorgiaStateSports.com will feature one of the 22 returning starters.

To say that All-Sun Belt Conference offensive guard and team captain Shamarious Gilmore is the elder statesman of the Georgia State program would be an understatement.

One of six "super seniors" who have elected to utilize the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic, Gilmore is the only one who has been in the program for six years. He enrolled at Georgia State in the fall of 2016 and took a redshirt year.

Gilmore earned a starting berth as a redshirt freshman, and he has been in the lineup ever since. Not only has he started 47 consecutive games on the offensive line, but he has rarely come out of the game.

During that time, he has been a key figure in the top three rushing seasons in program history in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and has helped the Panthers average 221 yards rushing, 433 yards of total offense and 32 points per game over the last two years.

Gilmore is the first player in GSU history to be a four-time all-conference selection, including first-team All-Sun Belt honors last season.

He also made history as the first, and still the only, GSU offensive lineman to score a touchdown. He realized that lineman's dream as a freshman in 2017 at Charlotte, when he recovered a fumble in the end zone after a blocked field goal.

Known as "Quion," his full name is Shamarious Da'Quion Bernard Gilmore.

Another interesting fact is that the Riverdale, Ga., native has 11 sisters. And two brothers. They will all be at Center Parc Stadium this fall to watch Quion and the Panthers, and you should too. Get your season tickets now by visiting GeorgiaStateSports.com/TIX or calling 404-413-4160.
