Meet the New Panthers: Omarion Hammond

With the start of the 2021 football season fast approaching, it's time to get to know Georgia State's class of newcomers that will join a GSU program that returns 22 starters from last year's bowl-winning squad.

Today's featured freshman is defensive lineman Omarion Hammond.

Hammond comes to Atlanta from AC Flora High School in Columbia, S.C. This outstanding pass rusher collected eight sacks in 2020 to lead AC Flora to the 4A state title in South Carolina.

Hammond is one of four defensive linemen in the 2021 signing class, along with Tylon Dunlap, Fuches "Deuce" Lewis II and Jamarion Ellis. The GSU defensive front is headlined by All-Sun Belt Conference seniors Dontae Wilson and Hardrick Willis, but also includes plenty of young talent, such as sophomores Jeffery Clark, Javon Denis, Thomas Gore and Miles Dickens, along with juniors Akeem Smith, Tre Moore and T.J. Smith. 

That defensive line played a key role in GSU's improved defense in 2020, helping the Panthers rank No. 7 in FBS with a school-record 35 sacks while setting another program by allowing just 3.86 yards per rush.

Georgia State opens the season on Sept. 4, when the Panthers host Army at Center Parc Stadium in a noon kickoff on ESPNU. That kicks off the most exciting and challenging schedule in program history, including non-conference games at North Carolina and Auburn and a home date with Charlotte. In Sun Belt Conference play, the Panthers host Appalachian State, Texas State, Arkansas State and Troy while traveling to ULM, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina.
