Meet the New Panthers: Jaylin Tolbert

With the start of the 2021 football season just three months away, it's time to get to know Georgia State's class of newcomers that will join a GSU program that returns 22 starters from last year's bowl-winning squad.

Today's featured freshman is wide receiver from Jaylin Tolbert from Greenwood (S.C.) High School.

Tolbert is a 6-3, 200-pounder, adding another tall, athletic pass catcher to the Panthers' deep receiving corps that features veterans standouts such as Sam Pinckney, Cornelius McCoy and Terrance Dixon, along with promising youngsters Jamari Thrash, Cadarrius Thompson, Robert Lewis, Tailique Williams and Jacob Freeman, along with UCF transfer Ja'Cyais Credle. In fact, Tolbert hails from the same high school and hometown as Pinckney.

A talented athlete, Tolbert was primarily a quarterback the last two years as he earned all-state, all-region and All-Lakelands recognition. In seve games, he rushed for 808 yards and eight touchdowns while pass for 492 yards and five touchdowns. Some of his top games include 192 yards rushing vs. Greer High School and 114 yards rushing with two touchdowns along with a 40-yard TD pass against Laurens High.

He scored 15 touchdowns while playing quarterback and receiver as a junior, including 20 receptions for 245 yards.

Georgia State opens the season on Sept. 4, when the Panthers host Army at Center Parc Stadium in a noon kickoff on ESPNU. That kicks off the most exciting and challenging schedule in program history, including non-conference games at North Carolina and Auburn and a home date with Charlotte. In Sun Belt Conference play, the Panthers host Appalachian State, Texas State, Arkansas State and Troy while traveling to ULM, Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina.
