The Real McCoy

Anticipation is high for the 2021 football season as Georgia State returns 22 starters from last year's record-setting team and LendingTree Bowl champions.

Head coach Shawn Elliott's squad welcomes back all 11 starters from an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 33.3 points per game, nine starters from a GSU defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a program-record 35 sacks, and their placekicker and punter.

Each week leading up to the 2021 season opener on Sept. 4 vs. Army at Center Parc Stadium, GeorgiaStateSports.com will feature one of the 22 returning starters.

CORNELIUS McCOY
WR, Senior, Deerfield Beach, Fla.

The elder statesman of Georgia State's deep and talented receiving corps is Cornelius McCoy, the senior who has earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors each of first three seasons with the Panthers.

The Deerfield Beach, Fla., native ranks fourth in GSU history with 136 career receptions and 1,699 receiving yards, trailing only the NFL trio of Robert Davis, Penny Hart and Albert Wilson. McCoy's 10 touchdown catches are tied for sixth in the Panther record book.

McCoy has not only been prolific but consistent, catching at least one pass in every game he has played (32), including at least two receptions in his last 27 games.

McCoy teams with Sam Pinckney to give the Panthers one of the top receiving tandems in the nation as the pair combined for 78 receptions for 1,262 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2020.

They headline a receiver room that also returns starting slot receiver Terrance Dixon and sixth-year senior Matlin Marshall. Jamari Thrash and Cadarrius Thompson flashed their potential last season, and the position welcomes a host of talented newcomers this fall: transfer Ja'Cyais Credle, redshirt freshmen Robert Lewis, Jacob Freeman, Tailique Williams and Christian Thomas and true freshman Jaylin Tolbert.
