Look for More Big Plays From the Hit Stick

Anticipation is high for the 2021 football season as Georgia State returns 22 starters from last year's record-setting team and LendingTree Bowl champions.

Head coach Shawn Elliott's squad welcomes back all 11 starters from an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 33.3 points per game, nine starters from a GSU defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a program-record 35 sacks, and their placekicker and punter.

Each week leading up to the 2021 season opener on Sept. 4 vs. Army at Center Parc Stadium, GeorgiaStateSports.com will feature one of the 22 returning starters.

ANTAVIOUS LANE
Safety, Sophomore-R, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Antavious Lane was a big hit in his first season in the GSU lineup. The safety known as "Hit Stick" was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference second team, becoming just the fourth GSU freshman to earn all-conference honors.

Showing a knack for getting his hands on the football, Lane tied the GSU season record with four interceptions (in eight games). He led the Sun Belt and ranked No. 6 in FBS with 0.5 interceptions per game and also ranked second in the league and No. 13 in FBS with 1.2 passes defended per game. Lane was Georgia State's third-leading tackler with 55 stops, including two tackles for loss, along with six pass breakups and a forced fumble.

He burst onto the scene in his second game of the season when he returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown vs. East Carolina. He also had five tackles and two pass breakups, helping hold ECU to 286 total yards, 50 yards rushing and no offensive touchdowns to earn Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

After adding interceptions against Troy and App State, Lane put an exclamation point on his season with five tackles and an interception in the LendingTree Bowl victory over WKU and was name to to the AP All-Bowl Team. His interception was the first against WKU QB Tyrell Pigrome all season after 278 attempts.

This season, Antavious has been joined on the team by his brother Antoine, a junior running back.
