The Center of Attention

Anticipation is high for the 2021 football season as Georgia State returns 22 starters from last year's record-setting team and LendingTree Bowl champions.

Head coach Shawn Elliott's squad welcomes back all 11 starters from an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 33.3 points per game, nine starters from a GSU defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a program-record 35 sacks, and their placekicker and punter.

Each week leading up to the 2021 season opener on Sept. 4 vs. Army at Center Parc Stadium, GeorgiaStateSports.com will feature one of the 22 returning starters.

The center of attention for the Georgia State offense is Malik Sumter, a three-year starter and two-time All-Sun Belt Conference performer on the front line.

Including Sumter, all five starters return on the Panthers' offensive line, which has been a key component in Georgia State's record-setting offenses, paving the way for a productive running game while protecting the quarterback for an explosive passing attack. As a unit, the offensive line enters the 2021 season with 137 career starts.

Sumter has started 28 straight games at center, helping the Panthers average 219 yards rushing per game since he moved into the starting lineup.

Not bad for a guy who had never played center before college!

Sumter came to Georgia State from Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, S.C., the 2016 5A state champion with a 15-0 record.
