Jones Named Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week

Baseball's Cameron Jones is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the Panthers on the mound in a series opening win over Coastal Carolina.

The two-way standout led the Panthers to a pair of victories last week with his work at the plate and on the mound.

In Tuesday's 14-inning victory over Wofford, Jones drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the 14th inning with an RBI-double, and then scored the winning run on Trey Horton's walk-off single. That gave the Panthers their fourth walk-off win of the season in the second-longest game in program history.

Starting on the mound Friday against Coastal Carolina, Jones pitched six innings and allowed just one run on two hits and tied his career high with seven strikeouts. He did not figure in the decision, but the Panthers went on to win 2-1.

Jones kept the Chanticleers off the scoreboard for the first five innings, giving him 10 straight scoreless innings, a streak that started in his complete game the previous Friday at South Alabama.

A second-year freshman from Kathleen, Ga., and Houston County High School, Jones is the younger brother of former Panther shortstop and Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week selection Justin Jones.

Jones and the Panthers will return to the diamond this Friday for a non-conference series in Nashville, Tenn., at Belmont.
