Smith Earns Second Sun Belt Player of Week Award

Josh Smith earned his second Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week award after leading Georgia State to a sweep at Texas State as he hit .583 and slugged 1.250, including two homers, two doubles and five RBI in the three games.

In the series opener, Georgia State trailed 3-1 in the fourth inning when Smith blasted a three-run homer to send the Panthers to a 7-4 victory. Then in Game 2 of the doubleheader, he had two doubles and a single and scored two runs in the 9-4 win. The sophomore left fielder also made a leaping catch at the wall to prevent an extra base hit.

Smith then opened the finale in San Marcos with a two-run home run in the first inning to give GSU a lead it would not relinquish as he led the Panthers to their first Sun Belt Conference series sweep since 2018 and first on the road since 2015.

Including the Tuesday game vs. Mercer, Smith slashed .500/.579/1.000 for the week with five RBI, six runs scored and three stolen bases in four games.

For the season, Smith is the Panthers' leading hitter at .325 with eight homers and 28 RBI. That includes a .366 clip in Sun Belt games. Over the last 20 games, he is hitting . 360 with six homers and 21 RBI.

The College Park, Ga., native (North Springs High School) also earned Sun Belt honors on April 21 after hitting a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning to cap Georgia State's nine-run rally, for 15-13 win at Appalachian State.

Smith and the Panthers conclude the regular season by hosting Little Rock Thursday through Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex, and then the Sun Belt Conference Championship opens next Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala. Georgia State currently stands fifth in the East Division but can finish anywhere from second to sixth, depending on the final weekend's games.
