Smith, Mize Homer But Coastal Carolina Evens Series

ATLANTA – Josh Smith and Will Mize homered for Georgia State, but Coastal Carolina evened the Sun Belt Conference series with an 8-4 victory Saturday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
The series will be decided in a 1 p.m. game Sunday on ESPN+.
 
Smith, the sophomore left fielder, hit a solo homer in the first inning, sending his sixth homer of the season over the wall centerfield. Mize, GSU's freshman shortstop, led off the second with his solo blast, also to center, for his fifth long ball of the year. But the Panthers trailed 3-2 after two complete.
 
Down 4-2 in the third, GSU scored one run on a wild pitch, and then Ashby Smith delivered an RBI-single on a perfectly executed hit-and-run to tie the game at 4-apiece.
 
Coastal Carolina (20-18, 4-7 Sun Belt) scored two runs in the first and then added a single run in five straight innings, taking advantage of four walks and four hit batters and executing small ball with three sacrifice bunts and a bunt single. In both the third inning and the fifth, the Chanticleers scored a run without the benefit of a hit.
 
Trailing 7-4, Georgia State (12-33, 7-10) had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. With two on and two out, Elian Merejo hit a ball deep to left field, but Nick Lucky made the catch at the wall.

Panther freshman right fielder Dalton Pearson kept a run off the board by throwing out a runner at home to end the first inning, the third runner he has cut down at the plate this season.
 
Saturday was a special day for the Georgia State program with the Mike Hurst Celebration before the game as the Panther Family celebrated the life and legacy of Georgia State's Hall of Fame coach. Numerous former players and coaches were in attendance to pay tribute.
