Panthers Win in 14th on Walk-Off Single by Pitcher Trey Horton

Fourth Walk-Off Win This Season

ATLANTA – Georgia State won the second-longest game in program history on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 14th inning by pitcher Trey Horton, whose first career at-bat gave the Panthers a 4-3 win over Wofford Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Georgia State (11-32) forced extra innings with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, tying the game on Elian Merejo's two-out, two-run double, and the Panthers trailed again after Wofford (24-14) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 14th.

Griffin Cheney led off the home half of the 14th with a single, and with one out, Cameron Jones capped a nine-pitch at-bat with a double to the gap in left center to score Cheney with the tying run.

With two outs and the GSU bench already emptied, the fourth-year junior right-handed pitcher Horton stepped to the plate for the first time. Batting from the left side, he worked the count full and then dropped a single into shallow left field to score Jones from second with the winning run.

That gave the Panthers' their fourth extra-inning walk-off win of the season, following 10-inning wins over West Virginia, Georgia Southern and Troy. The only longer game in program history was a 15-inning loss at William & Mary in 2009, when GSU head coach Brad Stromdahl was an assistant coach on the Panthers' staff.

"It was a battle of attrition. We used everyone on the bench for a great team win, and that's what it's all about," Stromdahl said.

"All the pitchers who continued to put up zeroes did a great job. We battled and battled and battled and luckily a ball fell in."

Georgia State trailed 2-0 in the ninth inning when Lavoisier Fisher led off with a pinch hit double down the right field line. After Cheney drew a one-out walk to put runners at first and second, Merejo smacked a double to left field. Fisher scored the tying run, and Cheney raced home from first, just beating the tag at home to tie the game.

Six Georgia State pitchers did an outstanding job, including Duncan Lutz with 3.1 scoreless innings and Camren Landry with three scoreless frames. Brandon Haston (1-1) pitched the final two innings to earn the victory.

Georgia State continues its homestand by hosting Coastal Carolina for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
