Jones, Dawson Star on Mound in 2-1 over Coastal Carolina

Will Mize Hit His Fourth Homer of the Season

ATLANTA – Will Mize homered to back outstanding pitching by Cameron Jones and Chandler Dawson and lead the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in Friday's Sun Belt Conference series opener at the GSU Baseball Complex.

With the win, Georgia State (12-32, 7-9 Sun Belt) now stands three games ahead of the Chanticleers (19-18, 3-7 Sun Belt) in the Sun Belt East Division standings.

Jones and Dawson, a pair of second-year freshmen and former high school teammates at Houston County High School in Warner Robins, combined to allow just one run on two hits with 11 strikeouts.

Jones, the left-handed starter, pitched six innings and tied his career-high with seven punchouts while allowing one run on two hits but did not figure in the decision. After keeping the Chanticleers off the scoreboard for the first five innings, he allowed a run in the sixth, ending a streak of 10 straight scoreless innings that started in his complete game last Friday at South Alabama.

Dawson (2-2), a righty, came on in the seventh and retired nine straight batters, including four strikeouts, to earn the victory. Over his last six appearances covering 14 innings, Dawson is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA.

Mize put the Panthers on the scoreboard with a towering solo home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the season.

Coastal Carolina tied the game on Alex Gattinelli's RBI-double in the sixth, and the Chanticleers had a  chance to take the lead, but B.T. Riopelle was tagged out at the plate on a ball that got away from the catcher.

Georgia State regained the lead in the seventh inning as Kyle Riesselmann, who walked, scored from third on a wild pitch with Griffin Cheney at the plate.

"Whenever Cam Jones is on the mound, we know we have a chance to win, and that's what he did again tonight," head coach Brad Stromdahl said.

"When two freshmen, Cam and Chandler, go back to back like that, it just continues to solidify the direction that this program is going. I'm just so happy for them and our team.

"Mize hit the home run and he's a freshman, and Riesselmann, who scored the winning run, is a freshman. The future is bright."

The series continues with a 4 p.m. game Saturday on ESPN+. The Panther program will host the Mike Hurst Celebration to celebrate the life and legacy of Georgia State's Hall of Fame head coach. Pregame activities begin at 2 p.m. and all are invited.
