Cheney is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week

Second baseman Griffin Cheney is the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week after hitting .500 in four games last week while figuring prominently in the Panthers' Sun Belt Conference series win over Troy.

The junior from John's Creek, Ga. (Northview High School) went 9-for-18 with four RBI and seven runs scored.

Cheney led the Panthers to back-to-back wins over Troy by going 6-for-9 with three RBI and six runs scored in those two contests.

He went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 17-15 series-clinching win, playing a key role in the Panthers' 5-run, eighth-inning rally as he singled and later stole third base and scored when the catcher's throw sailed into left field.

In Saturday's 7-5 win, Cheney had three hits and scored three runs, including a solo homer in the fifth inning that tied the game at 3-3.

Cheney also had three hits and an RBI in the Panthers' midweek game at No. 20 Georgia.

Cheney has started Georgia State's last 107 games, playing three different positions (second base, third base and shortstop) and failing to reach base in only 12 games during that stretch.

Cheney and the Panthers will return to the diamond on Tuesday hosting Georgia Tech. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
