Panthers Take Game 1 in Nine Innings

ATLANTA -- Georgia State and Coastal Carolina battled for nine innings in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader before GSU scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to win 3-2.

Sophie Mooney threw a gem in the circle for the Panthers, going all nine innings and striking out nine batters while allowing two earned. Mooney earned her sixth win of the season and successfully worked around nine hits and a walk.

The Panthers scored first with an RBI single from Bailee Richardson in the bottom of the first. Coastal took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

Down to their last strike with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, GSU evened the score as Sydney Stavro scored on a wild pitch to force extra innings with a 2-2 score.

Stavro singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and stole second base. She advanced to third on a sac bunt and after a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Stavro once again took home on a wild pitch to give GSU the victory.

Georgia State got off to a hot start in Game 2 of the doubleheader, but ultimately fell 6-3. The Panthers scored two on a Baylee Sexton double in the bottom of the second. Sexton then stole third and scored on a throwing error.

Coastal Carolina got on the board with a solo homer in the third and tied the game with a two-run homer in the fourth.

CCU pulled ahead with a three-run sixth inning to even the series.

GSU will fight for the series win Sunday at 1 p.m.
