Ninth-Inning Rally Comes Up Short in 10-7 Loss at No. 20 Georgia

Box Score Facing a nationally-ranked foe for the 15th time this season, Georgia State fell at No. 20 Georgia 10-7 Tuesday night at Foley Field.
 
One game after scoring nine runs in the ninth inning for a comeback victory at Appalachian State, the Panthers scored five in the ninth tonight, including a three-run home run by Will Goldberg, but the rally came up just short.
 
Freshman Cameron Jones, who hit a three-run home run in Sunday's ninth-inning comeback, continued his hot hitting with three hits on the night.
 
He led off the ninth with a single, went to third on an error and then scored on Dalton Pearson's RBI-single. After Preston Joye walked, Goldberg hit his first career homer with a blast over the trees in left field.
 
Will Mize's RBI-single made it 10-7 before the Panthers ran out of outs.
 
Griffin Cheney had three hits for the Panthers (8-26), including an RBI-single in the third inning. In the seventh, Preston Joye doubled down the right field line to bring home a run to make it a 6-2 game, but the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom half.  
 
Freshman right-hander Chandler Dawson turned in a strong relief outing. He came on with two runners on and two outs in the first inning and gave the Panthers 4.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
 
But the rest of the GSU staff struggled with command, issuing eight walks and hitting three batters.
 
Georgia State returns home to host Troy in a Sun Belt Conference weekend series that opens Friday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
