Panthers Fall 5-1 at No. 17 Tennessee

GSU Trailed 2-1 in 8th with Tying Run in Scoring Position

KNOXVILLE – Georgia State trailed 2-1 in the eighth inning at No. 17 Tennessee, but the Volunteers scored three in the eighth and went on to win 5-1 to clinch the weekend series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

True freshman Dalton Pearson drove in the Panthers' (4-8) run with an RBI-double in the seventh inning to score Griffin Cheney, who led off with a single. That brought GSU within 2-1.

Then the Panthers put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the eighth but couldn't bring him in. In the bottom of the frame, Tennessee's (10-2) Luc Lipcius hit a three-run homer to extend the Vols' lead to 5-1.

Georgia State starter Cameron Jones (0-1) allowed just one run on three hits in four innings but took the loss.

The Panthers collected seven hits, including a double and a single by Kalen Puckett, but left nine on base.

Three Tennessee pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts while walking just two. Starter Blake Tidwell (1-1) struck out seven in six scoreless innings.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. on SECN+.
