Smith Homers But Panthers Drop Series Opener at No. 17 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE – Playing its 11th-straight game against a ranked opponent, Georgia State fell 6-1 in its series opener at No. 17 Tennessee Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Josh Smith, Georgia State's sophomore outfielder from College Park, Ga., hit his first career homer with a solo shot in the seventh inning.

The Panthers (4-7) outhit Tennessee 9-8 as shortstop Will Mize went 3-for-4 and right fielder Dalton Pearson added two hits.

GSU starting pitcher Ryan Watson (1-1) had a tough start as he was charged with three balks in the first two innings, helping the Vols (9-2) jump in front 3-0. But Watson did not allow a run after that and finished with seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Panthers trailed just 3-0 after five innings, but the Vols extended their lead to 6-0 in the sixth, aided by two unearned runs.

Tennessee starter Will Heflin (1-0) was outstanding, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run while striking out eight.
