Mic'd Up with Cory Peoples

Cornerbacks Coach is High Energy, All the Time

As Georgia State resumes spring practice this week, the most animated coach on the field is usually cornerbacks coach Cory Peoples.

The Panthers continue spring drills through April 16, when they will hold their annual Spring Game at 6:30 p.m. at Center Parc Stadium.

Season tickets for the 2021 season are on sale now - call 404-413-4160 or click here to purchase or renew.

Peoples enters his second season on head coach Shawn Elliott's defensive staff. In 2020, he worked with All-Sun Belt Conference cornerback Quavian White, who had three interceptions and eight pass breakups, along with three-year starter Jaylon Jones, who led the Panthers with 11 pass breakups. White also contributed 1.5 of Georgia State's school-record 35 sacks.

Describing his coaching philosophy, Peoples said, "I believe in coaching hard, but at the same time, you have to be able to show them some love. If you want kids to buy in, you have coach them hard, but at the same time, you have to know when to stroke them a little bit.

"Don't let your ego get in the way. If you always try to do what's best for the kids, that will lead you the right way."

With White, Jones and veteran Tyler Gore returning, along with younger cornerbacks such as Bryquice Brown and Cameron Sims, Peoples is enjoying the competition at practice.

"We can't go against a better group of receivers on a daily basis than our guys, so we are really pushing each other," Peoples said.

And competition is what it's all about.

"I stress to them to be competitive in everything they do, and be consistent every day," he said.

MORE ON GEORGIA STATE FOOTBALL

Head coach Shawn Elliott's squad returns 22 of 24 starters, including all 11 starters from an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 33.3 points per game,  nine starters from a GSU defense that ranked No. 7 in FBS with a program-record 35 sacks, and their placekicker and punter.

The 2020 LendingTree Bowl champions welcome back 12 All-Sun Belt Conference players, led by first-team selections in left guard Shamarious Gilmore and placekicker Noel Ruiz, as well as the LendingTree Bowl Most Valuable Player in quarterback Cornelious Brown IV, along with numerous other playmakers on both sides of the ball.

GSU will enter the 2021 season on a three-game winning streak after ending 2020 with victories over South Alabama, Georgia Southern and Western Kentucky in the LendingTree Bowl.

The Panthers will face the most exciting and challenging schedule in program history with non-conference games against Army, North Carolina, Auburn and Charlotte along with a Sun Belt Conference slate that features three straight road games against rival Georgia Southern and 2020 co-champions Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

GSU will play seven teams that played in bowl games, including six foes who won eight or more games in 2020.

Georgia State has earned back-to-back bowl berths and posted consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history.
The Panthers have earned three bowl berths in the last four seasons.
