CHARLESTON, S.C.- Georgia State women's tennis (1-3) earned their first victory of the young season with a 4-2 result over Charleston Southern (1-1). The match spanned over two days beginning Monday late afternoon and finishing Tuesday.
Charleston Southern defeated GSU on courts one and two in doubles action to gain the one-point advantage and quick lead going into singles play.
Three matches competed at a time in singles action. The Buccaneers maintained momentum and extended their lead by defeating Ellie Aldrich on line 3. Maddy Frediani, a freshman from the United Kingdom, notched her first collegiate victory with a 6-3, 6-4 decision on court five to put the Panthers on the board. Action was suspended as Eva Chivu and her opposition took their match to a third and deciding set.
The Buccaneers forfeited line four, knotting the match at two a piece as action resumed Tuesday. Chivu propelled GSU into the 3-2 lead, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win. Sophomore Alexia Alvarez edged out a straight set victory, 6-4, 7-6(1), on court six to clinch the team win. Alvarez's victory also marked the sophomore's first win in collegiate dual match action.
The Panthers will return to the Peach State to face Georgia Gwinnett (3-0) tomorrow, Feb. 17. First serve is set for a 2:00 p.m. start time. Fans can follow along with the action via live stats and streaming.
