ATLANTA --
Jamil Muhammad is this week's GSU Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the football team to a 37-10 win over Troy on Saturday as the defense put together one of its best efforts of the year.
The outside linebacker made two sacks and returned a fumble 72 yards for a touchdown against the Trojans.
Â
Muhammad, the sophomore from Madison, Ala., and former quarterback, helped the Panthers hold Troy without a touchdown until a late score against Georgia State's reserves.
Â
GSU allowed just 57 yards rushing on 38 attempts (1.5 yards per attempt).
Â
After the Panthers took a 20-3 early in the third quarter, Troy drove to the GSU 19, when a sack by linebacker
Blake Carroll caused a fumble, and Muhammad scooped up the ball and raced 72 yards for the third-longest defensive score in program history and a commanding 27-3 lead.
Â
On the next possession, Troy again moved into the red zone, but Muhammad came up with two sacks in three plays, totaling 18 yards in losses to force a missed field goal from 45 yards.
Â
The win was Georgia State's sixth in the last seven games and gave GSU its school-record sixth Sun Belt victory to secure second place in the East Division.
Georgia State is expected to learn its bowl fate this Sunday afternoon.
