Men's Soccer Falls to No. 21 NIU 2-1 in OT

Box Score ATLANTA – Looking to pick up a win over a ranked opponent for the second time this month, the Georgia State men's soccer team nearly pulled off the upset before falling to No. 21 Northern Illinois 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night.

Pepe Martinez found the back of the net for Northern Illinois (11-1-2, 3-0-2 MAC) just 3:43 into overtime to secure the victory for the Huskies.

Martinez got NIU on the board first in the 30th minute off a perfect pass from Diego Martinez. The Huskies would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

However, it was Georgia State (10-3, 2-2 MAC) that was the aggressor in the second half leading Justin Guest to score his fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute to tie the match 1-1.

Each team had multiple opportunities in the final 20 minutes before the game headed to overtime.

Northern Illinois outshot Georgia State 24-7 as Panther goalkeeper Gunther Rankenburg finished the night with a season-high nine saves. It was the most shots the Panthers have given up this year.
