ATLANTA- In the upcoming weeks we will be honoring this year's senior class. This week's spotlight is on Leah Wilcox.
Wilcox began playing volleyball at nine years old. The Florida native shined during her high school career at St. John Lutheran. She charged the offense, recording 1,394 kills in her career. Wilcox helped lead her team to win two State Championship titles (2014 and 2016). She was named Team MVP at the conclusion of the 2016 title run.
After high school, Wilcox began her collegiate volleyball journey as a standout player at Santa Fe College. Her 24 kills in a single game set a school record, which still stands. In her rookie campaign she was named Freshman of the Year. In two seasons she registered 429 kills and was a two-time All-Conference selection. She was named to the 2018 FSCAA All-Region 8 Team to cap off her career with the Saints. Prior to her junior year, Wilcox and fellow Santa Fe College teammate, Jordan Shoemaker, transferred to Georgia State.
During her first season as a Panther, Wilcox became a go-to hitter for the offense. She was one of three players on the team to accumulate over 200 kills (208). Wilcox recorded the most kills on the team for seven consecutive matches in the second half of the 2019 season. She also bolstered the defensive effort at the net with 33 blocks.
"Leah sees the game at a high level," said head coach Sally Polhamus. "She has the tools to find the opponents' openings and attack them. She is a competitive player that has the ability to take over a match."
Wilcox is working to increase her kills per set going into her final season. As a leader on the team, she is hoping to cultivate a culture that inspires those around her.
Wilcox shines on the court and in the classroom. She was named to the President's List during both semesters last year. Upon graduation, she will finish getting her requirements to attend veterinary school.
"These four years fly by, so make the best of each situation and enjoy the little things," said Wilcox when asked what she would tell incoming student-athletes.
