ATLANTA- For the past several weeks we have been highlighting this year's volleyball senior class. This week's spotlight is on Dzemila Hadzic.Â
The Bosnian began playing volleyball at eight years old. She played throughout her adolescence. Upon graduating high school, Hadzic knew she wanted to pursue an education while continuing to play volleyball. The outside hitter set her sights on playing collegiate volleyball in the United States.
Since many American collegiate volleyball coaches do not recruit in Bosnia, Hadzic had to put in extra effort to play volleyball in the States. She discovered the Sun Belt Conference and sent a highlight video to head coach Sally Polhamus. After Hadzic met Polhamus in Bosnia, she knew she would love the Georgia State program.Â
Her freshman season she participated in 24 games, making three starts. Hadzic made an immediate impact to the offense, recording 79 kills. She would add 50 kills and prove to be one of the best serving threats on the squad during her sophomore campaign.Â
Hadzic enters the 2020 season after a banner junior year. She ranked among the top servers in the Sun Belt Conference, serving .33 aces per set. She proved to be a go-to hitter for the Panthers throughout the season, notching 155 kills. She achieved a career high 19 kills in a single match against Fordham at the beginning of the season. In her final season, Hadzic hopes to lead the Panthers to a Sun Belt Conference championship.Â
"Dzemila (Hadzic) has the ability to be an impact player with her ball control and shot variety," said Polhamus. "She has a high volleyball IQ and knows how to score."
Off the court Hadzic landed on the 2019 Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Upon graduation she plans to open a vegan restaurant. Â
"Being a student-athlete has taught me a lot of things," said Hadzic. "One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that we are capable of achieving whatever we set our mind to as long as we remain positive."
