A Singer Yet Heard

Moriah Taylor has talents on and off the court.

Georgia State fans usually see her coming down the court draining threes. However, when not at the gym practicing shots, Moriah Taylor is probably sitting in front her piano singing and striking keys to her favorite songs.

The three-point specialist began singing around the house at eight-years-old, but it wasn't until seventh grade where she discovered a true passion in using her voice.

"When people look at me, they don't see me as the singing type," she explained. "I started singing when I was eight, and about that time I had taught myself how to play the piano and practiced my singing all the time."

How do you become good at anything? You keep practicing. As Taylor explained, plenty of repetition and commitment led to a skill that shocked some of her closest friends.

GSU guard and teammate Taylor Henderson almost didn't believe her ears the first time she heard a song during a ride home following a Sunday practice.

"When I heard Moriah sing for the first time we were in the car listening to music and I was just like—Wow," said Henderson. "I really didn't think it was her voice in the speaker. I thought it was a professional singer."

Taylor has gained plenty of experience with studios, learning how to fluctuate her voice and even making her own music. Five months ago, she recorded a song with a family member that she dedicated to a personal story she hopes to share with the world someday.

"That song means a lot to me," she stated. "It's a reminder [for me] to keep pushing through adversity every day because one day I'll show the world what all I'm capable of."

Maybe in 15 years when the three-point specialist is done with a playing career, GSU fans will flick through their channels and see a familiar face stealing the show on national television. In fact, large audiences filled with thousands of people isn't an environment she shies away from.

"If I had the opportunity to sing in front of a big crowd, I would."

Despite her talents off the court, the freshman guard wants it to be known what comes first in her heart.

"If it came down to choosing between basketball or singing I would choose basketball," she stated. "But singing will always be a part of my life and something I will forever enjoy doing."

Taylor grew as a player during her freshman season. She shined during Sun Belt games, averaging 6.4 points per game and leading the team in 3-pointers made.
