Hess Hits First Collegiate Homer; Panthers Fall in Season Opener

Hess' first collegiate hit goes for a home run.

TAMPA, Fla. – Georgia State's softball team opened the 2020 season at the USF-Rawlings Invitational in Tampa Friday, losing to Fresno State 5-0 and #17/#14 Michigan 6-1.

The Panthers were blanked in Game 1 against Fresno State who is receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.

Newcomer Sydney Stavro, a graduate transfer from Georgia Tech, recorded Georgia State's first hit of the season with a single up the middle in the third. Stavro reached base twice in the contest.

Freshman Sophie Mooney got the start in the circle for GSU and look good in the opening innings of her collegiate debut. A three-run homer in the third contributed to a four-run frame that gave FS all the lead they would need.

In Game 2 against Top 25 Michigan, redshirt freshman Emily Buck made her collegiate debut after missing all of last season due to injury.  Buck managed to hold Michigan's potent offense to just two runs through five innings.

Buck was chased from the game in the sixth but not before turning in an impressive debut.

The biggest hit of the day for GSU came in the top of the fourth against the Wolverines. Freshman Daisy Hess took the first pitch of the inning an deposited the ball well over the outfield wall for GSU's first run of 2020 and Hess' first collegiate hit and home run.

The Panthers continue the USF-Rawlings Invite Saturday against Illinois State and host USF.
