Panthers Fall to Coastal Carolina on PKs in Sun Belt Championship

Box Score ATLANTA – Playing in its sixth-straight Sun Belt Conference Championship Game, No. 2-seed Georgia State fell to No. 1-seed Coastal Carolina on penalty kicks on Sunday afternoon at Center Parc Stadium.

After both teams went scoreless through 110 minutes of action, Coastal Carolina (6-1-1) outscored Georgia State (9-2-2) 4-3 in penalty kicks and will now advance to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

The Chanticleers outshot the Panthers 18-16 as Georgia State played a man down the final 73 minutes of the game after senior George Proctor, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year and Sun Belt Defender of the Year, received a red card.

Georgia State was looking for its second conference championship in the last three years, but unfortunately fell in PKs to Coastal for the second-straight year.

Junior Matthew Fearnley led the Panthers with four shots including three on goal, while senior goalkeeper Paul Tyson finished with five saves.

Marcelo Lage and Emile Rzepecki led the Chanticleers with three shots a piece, while Tor Saunders, who was named Tournament MVP, recorded six saves.

  • Georgia State played in its sixth-straight Sun Belt Conference Championship Game.
  • Coastal Carolina now leads the all-time series with Georgia State 12-6-1, including a 6-3 mark in Atlanta.
  • GSU and Coastal met for the Sun Belt Tournament title for the fourth of the last five seasons. The Chanticleers have come out victorious in three of those matches.
QUICK NOTES
  • Since joining the Sun Belt, GSU has combined for a 7-4-3 record in conference tournament play.
  • The Panthers last won the championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
