Men's Basketball

A Unique Transition

Leading up to opening night of the 2020-21 Georgia State men's basketball season, each member of the roster will be featured on a different day with a story, video, and social media elements. We continue the series today with freshman Kaleb Scott who signed with the Panthers last November, coming to Atlanta from the small town of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.

The transition from high school to college can be difficult for anyone. For some, coming from a small town to a big city like Atlanta can offer equal challenges. Now try doing both in the middle of a 100-year pandemic.

All of those things are exactly what freshman Kaleb Scott is attempting to accomplish after officially joining the Panthers this summer while learning in a virtual environment this fall.

"Coming from a small town where there really weren't a whole lot of people, everyone really knew everyone," said Scott. "It was definitely different than being here in a city like Atlanta where you see new people every day. I enjoy the close-knit small town feel and sense of community that everyone has, but I am also enjoying being in this different environment as well."

The recruitment process can be an equal challenge for young men and women, but for Kaleb, like many others, was impressed by head coach Rob Lanier and what he offered not just from a basketball sense, but from an academic perspective as well.

"My parents have truly been the biggest influence in my life," Scott said. "Growing up and playing on different circuits, they were always helping me through my college recruiting process. It would have been so much more difficult without the both of them. They provided me with good insight on both the basketball side and the academic side. The two of them have always been there to help me out."

Now a member of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Scott continues to understand the importance of a college education whether learning in a classroom or digital environment.

With a few months now under his belt, the freshman is also starting to settle in with practice underway so he can continue to work on his craft on the court.

"It's definitely been a huge jump from high school to college basketball," Scott said. The pace of the game is much faster. Everyone on the court has some sort of size or some sort of physical capability. But I love the challenge of working to become better every day."

Scott is one of three freshmen to join the Panthers this year as Georgia State welcomes six newcomers to the court for the 2020-21 season. Just has Scott has high expectations for himself and his teammates, so does a fan base hungry for another successful season of Panther basketball.
