ATLANTA -- Making his first career start, fifth-year senior Will White pitched five scoreless innings to earn his first career victory and lead Georgia State to a 5-1 victory over Savannah State Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Five Georgia State (12-25) pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts, while Brandon Bell paced the offense with three hits and one run batted in.
White (1-1) gave up just two hits with a career-high five strikeouts in five shutout innings, a career-long outing for the left-hander from Marietta, Ga., who had made 59 career relief appearances before tonight's start. Then Brendon Case (one inning) and Jake Rogers (two innings) allowed just one hit in three scoreless frames to take the shutout to the ninth inning.
After Savannah State (7-18-1) managed a run in the ninth and had two runners on base, freshman Griffin Bonner came on to record the final two outs to earn his first save.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Dalton Davies and Daino Deas hit back-to-back singles to put runners at first and third with one out. Griffin Cheney drove in one run with a sacrifice fly, and after Deas stole second, Bell's single up the middle brought him home to give GSU a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Elian Merejo led off with a walk, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw and then scored on Chase Frady's single to right field. Rhett Harper walked and Josh Smith beat out a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Davies hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who tagged Smith for the second out but threw wildly to first, allowing two runs to score and put the Panthers up 5-0.
Georgia State heads on the road to South Alabama for a Sun Belt Conference series that will be played Thursday through Saturday on Easter Weekend.
