SCHEDULE UPDATE: Sunday's Game 3 of the series has been moved to Saturday as the teams will play a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 13-2 to Samford in the opener of a three-game series at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Samford (5-3) jumped in front with three runs in the third inning, but the Panthers (3-6) answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Enrique Ferrer singled, moved to third on wild pickoff throw and scored on a groundout by Daino Deas.
But the Bulldogs pulled away with three runs in the fourth and six in the fifth. Samford collected 15 hits in a rare subpar outing for Georgia State starter Hunter Gaddis (0-1).
Samford left-hander Samuel Strickland (2-1) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits to earn the victory.
GSU third baseman Ryan Glass was 2-for-2 with a single and an RBI-double, and right fielder Brandon Bell also had a single and a double.
Sophomore right-hander Joah Curry struck out four in three innings in relief, and freshman righty Grant Gaspard finished the game by retiring five straight in his first outing in a Georgia State uniform.
With rain in the forecast for Sunday, the series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
