Another decade has come and gone and what a decade it has been for the Georgia State men's basketball team. Over the last 10 years, the program has established a new tradition of excellence winning more games during the previous decade than any other decade in program history – and it wasn't even close.
More remarkable than just the wins was the change in national perception. Three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last five years will do that, but also victories over Power 5 programs while watching some of the best players in program history come and go.
Let's start at the top – wins, and a lot of them. Georgia State won 197 games during the 2010's, 39 more wins than any other decade in program history. That is just a tad under 20 wins per season which is even more remarkable when you think the program won just 20 games in the 1960's. The previous best decade was the last one (from 2000-09) when the Panthers won 158 games, an average of 15.8 per season.
The middle part of the decade might be remembered the most as in 2015 Georgia State shocked the world when R.J. Hunter hit a 30-foot 3-pointer to defeat Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, capping a monumental 12-point comeback with just 2:53 to play. Hunter's heroics along with his dad, head coach
Ron Hunter, falling off a stool while coaching with a torn Achilles made for a 'One Shining Moment' story that will never be forgotten.
Just a few years later, the Panthers made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. It capped a lot of 'firsts' for Georgia State throughout the decade that show just what this program is hoping to become in the 2020's with a new convocation center coming online in just a couple of years.
There was also the 22-point comeback and buzzer-beater 3-pointer by
Malik Benlevi at Alabama; the blowout win over in-state foe Georgia in the Cayman Islands Classic; plenty of wins over in-state rival Georgia Southern (including one that ruined Senior Day for them); a win at VCU in front of a sold-out crowd the year after the Rams went to the Final Four; and how could we forget multiple Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships in New Orleans.
We also had a first round pick in the NBA Draft (R.J. Hunter) for the first time in program history and watched as former head coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell was FINALLY inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame.
A decade that started with a 70-61 win over Towson on Jan. 2, 2010 ended with a victory over Middle Georgia State on Monday night. What a decade of Panther basketball it has been! If the trend of getting better continues each decade, the 2020's will be a 10-year stretch no one will soon forget about.
