Briggs Scores Twice in GSU’s Shutout Over Appalachian State

Briggs recorded his fifth multi-goal performance on Saturday

BOONE, N.C. – Georgia State men's soccer capped the regular season with an impressive 3-0 road victory over Appalachian State Saturday night at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex, getting a pair of goals from junior forward Aris Briggs.

The win moved the Panthers to 10-4-3 on the year and 2-3 in league play. GSU head coach Brett Surrency has now led Georgia State to double-digit wins in four consecutive seasons and earned career win No. 99 on Saturday, one victory away from becoming just the second head coach in school history to reach 100 career wins.

Appalachian State got some of its best scoring opportunities of the night in the opening two minutes of Saturday's match, as the Mountaineers had a shot on goal saved by a Georgia State defender followed by an attempt inside the box that hit off the crossbar.

The Panthers broke the scoreless tie minutes later, as an App State turnover in its own half led to Briggs' first goal of the night. The Memphis, Tenn., native found the back of the net again in the 15th minute, when Luke Jordan slotted a pass to Briggs who finished for his 14th goal of the season.

Saturday was the fifth time this season Briggs had scored two or more goals in single contest, leading all players in the Sun Belt. He is one goal away from earning a spot in the top-10 of GSU's record book for goals scored in a single season.

Appalachian State opened the second half looking to cut into the 2-0 deficit, but each time the Mountaineers produced a threatening scoring chance GSU keeper Paul Tyson was there to make the stop.

The Liverpool, England, native ended the night with four saves and his sixth clean sheet of the season. It was the eighth time this year Tyson had recorded four or more saves in a match.

George Proctor gave Georgia State extra insurance on its lead in the 85th minute, when the junior defender booted in a free kick from roughly 25 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.

GSU will head into the 2019 Sun Belt Tournament having won three of its last four as the reigning Sun Belt champions await to receive their first-round matchup after the conclusion of all of Saturday's conference games.
