Surrency Reaches 100 Career Wins, Panthers Dominate Georgia Southern 4-0 to Advance to SBC Tournament Semifinals

GSU takes on top-seed Central Arkansas in the SBC Tournament semifinals 4 p.m. ET Friday on ESPN+

BOONE, N.C. – Head coach Brett Surrency earned career win No. 100 as Georgia State men's soccer cruised to a 4-0 shutout victory over rival Georgia Southern in Wednesday's opening round of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Surrency became the second head coach in program history to reach the century mark in career wins, joining Scottie O'Neill who coached the Panthers from 1976-86.

GSU improved to 11-4-3 overall with the victory, the fourth consecutive season Surrency has led the Panthers to 11 or more wins. Georgia State will take on top-seed Central Arkansas (10-6-1) in the SBC Tournament semifinals 4 p.m. ET Friday.

The Panthers had a strong start to Wednesday's match, controlling possession for much of the first half and jumped to an early 1-0 lead behind a goal from Aris Briggs in the 25th minute. Georgia State continued to create threatening scoring opportunities, producing seven shots on frame through the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net for a second time before the first-half whistle blew.

GSU picked up right where it left off to start the second, as a pass from Frank Rosenwald met Matthew Fearnley in the box who buried his sixth goal of the year to put the Panthers ahead 2-0 in the 61st minute.

Briggs added to the Georgia State lead in the 78th minute, when the Memphis, Tenn., native fired a shot that hit the crossbar, rebounded his miss and booted in his 16th goal of the season. It was the sixth time this year Briggs had scored at least twice in a single match.

Briggs became the first Panther to score 16 goals in a single season since Tom Manget in 1972 and is now tied for ninth all-time on the GSU list for goals scored in a season.

Sophomore midfielder Tristan Jumeau provided the exclamation point in the 79th minute, scoring GSU's fourth goal of the night to cap off the 4-0 win – the largest margin of victory over Georgia Southern since 2003. Wednesday was also the fifth straight season Georgia State has defeated the Eagles in the Sun Belt Tournament.

Between the posts, Paul Tyson tallied his seventh shutout of the year, tying him for the single-season record for shutouts in school history. Tyson joins former GSU keeper Yannic Horn, who recorded seven clean sheets in 2016 and 2017.

All tournament matches are set for live coverage on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Live statistics are available on SunBeltSports.org.
