Panthers Blank Central Arkansas 1-0, Advance to SBC Tournament Final for Fifth Straight Season

Tyson sets single-season record for shutouts in Friday's win over Central Arkansas

BOONE, N.C. – A strike from senior defender Alex Summerfield in the 76th minute backed by a solid defensive performance led by upperclassmen Summerfield, Kyle Clinton, George Proctor and Paul Tyson, Georgia State men's soccer earned its fifth straight trip to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament final after knocking off top-seed Central Arkansas 1-0 Friday night at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

The win improved GSU to 12-4-3 overall, the fourth time under head coach Brett Surrency the Panthers have reached a dozen wins in a single season. Georgia State will face the winner of the Appalachian State-Coastal Carolina semifinal at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN+.

While the Central Arkansas attack finished Friday's match with 21 shots, the GSU back line limited the Bears to just five shots on target, all of which were saved by Tyson. The Liverpool, England, native recorded his eighth clean sheet on Friday, setting a new program record for most shutouts in a single season.

Georgia State struggled to create many threatening scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, finishing the half with just one shot, a low-roller from Aris Briggs in the fifth minute that was scooped up by the Central Arkansas keeper.

The Panthers had more production in the second half, getting a pair of shots from sophomore forward Matthew Fearnley and another from freshman midfielder Luke Jordan. GSU eventually found the game-winning goal in the 76th minute when Summerfield booted in a strike from the left side of the box for his second goal of the season.

Surrency and company will look to become the first team to win back-to-back Sun Belt championships since Coastal Carolina in 2016-17. The Panthers defeated rival Georgia Southern 4-2 in the 2018 SBC Tournament final to earn its first Sun Belt title and second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.

All tournament matches are set for live coverage on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Live statistics are available on SunBeltSports.org.
