Georgia State Falls to Coastal Carolina in PKs in SBC Tournament Championship

Panthers end the year 12-4-4

BOONE, N.C. – After both sides remained deadlocked at one goal apiece through two overtime periods, Coastal Carolina edged past Georgia State men's soccer 6-5 in penalty kicks in Sunday's Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship, ending the Panthers' run at back-to-back conference titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the loss, GSU had a successful 2019 campaign filled with history. The Panthers (12-4-4) enjoyed the best start in program history at 6-0-3, surpassing the previous school record of seven straight matches without a loss to start a season set in 1967. On Sunday, GSU made its fifth straight appearance in the SBC Tournament final, the first school to achieve that mark since South Alabama in 1991-95.

Junior forward Aris Briggs ended the year with 16 goals, tying Tom Manget (1972) for the ninth-most goals in a single season in program history. The Memphis, Tenn., native also ranks among the top three in goals scored in NCAA Division I.

Paul Tyson, aided by an experienced back line of Kyle Clinton, George Proctor, Alex Summerfield and Ramon Munoz among others, finished the season with eight shutouts, setting a new single-season school record.

The Panthers knocked off No. 10 Charlotte on Oct. 15, the fourth time under 10th-year head coach Brett Surrency GSU had defeated a ranked opponent. Surrency also led Georgia State to 12 victories for the fourth time during his tenure. On Wednesday, Surrency picked up career win No. 100 by beating rival Georgia Southern, becoming the second head coach in school history to reach the century mark in career wins.

Sunday's championship match started slowly, with Georgia State controlling the possession but unable to put many shots on frame. The Panthers held a 10-4 advantage in total shots at the break, but only had two – both from freshman midfielder Ross Finnie – on target.

The Chanticleers battled back in the second half, creating more opportunities for the go-ahead goal. Coastal Carolina got a number of headers in the box as time wore on but saw the majority of their attempts go wide.

GSU found new life in the 87th minute when Matthew Fearnley buried a strike from distance to give the Panthers the lead with less than three minutes to go. Coastal Carolina found the answer in the final minute, getting a goal from Sam Snaith to force overtime.

Neither side was able to find the back of the net in either 10-minute overtime period, pushing the 2019 SBC Tournament final to be decided by penalty kicks.

GSU took a 1-0 lead in PKs after hitting the first followed by a save from Gunther Rankenburg. The Chanticleers responded with a save of their own and converted on their second attempt, tying it at 1-1 after the second round. Each side converted on their next four attempts, with the Panthers hitting the crossbar on their sixth.

Coastal Carolina next found the back of the net to earn a 1-1 (6-5) result and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia State's Tyson, Summerfield and Freddie Read were named to the All-Tournament team after the conclusion of the match.
