Rockets Hand Panthers Season-Opening Defeat

Jada Lewis scored her 800th career point in the loss.

ATLANTA – Five freshmen made their Georgia State women's basketball debuts Tuesday night in GSU's season-opener at the GSU Sports Arena, but Toledo left Atlanta with a 74-48 victory.

True freshman Taylor Henderson led GSU in scoring with 13 points and redshirt junior Jada Lewis and freshman Kamryn Dziak each added 12 points. Shaq Miller-McCray's seven rebounds was most on the team.

"One thing we talked about is we can't let our offense dictate our defensive effort and we gave up too many easy points in the third period there," head coach Gene Hill said. "We have a lot of things that we need to work on and it's all about how we respond I told them we have to come in here tomorrow and have a mentality that we're here to get better each and every day."

Georgia State made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and led for more than eight minutes in the first half, but Toledo held a 35-32 advantage at halftime.

The Rockets heated up in the second half, shooting nearly 70% from the field to put the game away.

While five different GSU freshmen made their debuts, a veteran surpassed a milestone. Lewis entered the game at 795 career points and scored five in the first quarter to reach the 800-point mark. Lewis was chosen to the 2019-20 Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team.

Next up for the Panthers is a home contest against FIU on Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Sports Arena.
