Panthers Claw Back From 22-Point Deficit, Fall Late to FIU

Henderson scores 31; Miller-McCray grabs 20 rebounds.

ATLANTA – Georgia State led in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 22 points, but ultimately fell 70-63 to FIU Monday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

FIU raced out to a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 22 midway through the second quarter before Georgia State finally found a rhythm on both offense and defense. Over the remaining three minutes of the first half, GSU battled to trail by just 11 at the break.

Freshman Taylor Henderson was a major part of the comeback as the Birmingham, Ala., native scored 14 of GSU's 21 2nd-quarter points.

Georgia State continued its momentum into the second half as Kamryn Dziak drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 42-34 game in favor of FIU.

GSU kept chipping away at FIU's lead and outscored FIU 20-11 in the 3rd quarter. Shaq Miller-McCray totaled 10 of her career-high 20 rebounds in the 3rd quarter alone as the defense held FIU to 25% shooting from the field.

As the Panthers and Panthers headed to the final period, FIU's lead had shrunk to just two, 53-51.

"We picked up our defensive intensity quite a bit. We had some breakdowns in the first half, but we were able to not make those same mistakes in the 3rd quarter and create some more turnovers," head coach Gene Hill said. We're still not looking comfortable offensively with the flow of things and we need to continue to get better in that area."

The 4th quarter started our great for GSU as freshman Moriah Taylor opened the quarter with a 3-pointer to give GSU its first lead since the opening minutes.

There would be four lead changes in the 4th quarter with FIU taking the lead for good with 4:47 remaining. FIU would hold on to win 70-63.

Henderson finished with 31 points, most for a Panther since Kelcey Roegiers scored 33 points in a game in 2007. She also added four rebounds and three assists.

Miller-McCray's 20 rebounds is most in a single-game since Lakia Hayes had 23 in 1994 against FAU. Pam Miller totaled 20 rebounds in 1991 also against FIU.

Jada Lewis and Dziak each finished with eight points.

Georgia State falls to 0-2 and will play its first road game of the season just two miles north at Georgia Tech next Wednesday, Nov. 20.
