State Downs Southern on the Road

The offense and defense both shine in the five-set thriller in Statesboro

STATESBORO- Georgia State took down rival Georgia Southern on the road Tuesday evening. Leah Wilcox, Meisheia Griffin, and Madelyn Ott all threw down double-digit kills helping the Panthers to a five set win (27-25, 25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 15-9) over the Eagles.

The defense would step up in the win with Lauren Bandera, Ryan Spicer-Gordon, Kampbell Hehr, and Jordan Shoemaker all recording double-digit digs. At the net Griffin would notch six blocks to bolster the defensive effort.

After tying the game 2-2, Georgia State would take the lead and never relinquish it in the opening frame. The setting duo of Shoemaker and Hehr would spread the offense dishing out assists to six different hitters. Wilcox and Griffin would connect on a crucial block to give the Panthers the 27-25 opening frame victory.

State controlled things early in the second set. The two middles, Ott and Griffin, would take control of the set finding six kills en route to a 25-19 win.

The Panthers would drop the third and fourth 25-22. Despite eight combined kills by Wilcox in the frames. In the tiebreaker, Shoemaker and Hehr would force Georgia Southern's defense to stay on their toes by evenly dispersing assists to every position at the net. Bandera and Spicer-Gordon would each tack on an ace as GSU never trailed, coasting to a 15-9 set win final set victory.

With the win, Georgia State has defeated the Eagles in four of the last five meetings dating back to 2017. The victory gave GSU a half point in the Rivalry Series as the Eagles lead 2.0-1.5.

Georgia State will look to sweep Southern and secure a full point in the Rivalry Series on Friday as the squads battle at GSU Sports Arena in the regular season finale. The seniors will be recognized before first serve, which is slated for 6:30 p.m.
