Briggs’ Hat Trick Leads Georgia State Past UAB 4-2

Briggs tallied his fourth multi-goal performance of the year on Tuesday

ATLANTA – Aris Briggs recorded his fourth multi-goal performance of the season as his hat trick led Georgia State men's soccer to a 4-2 victory over UAB Tuesday night at the GSU Soccer Complex.

The win moved GSU to 9-3-3 overall, concluding the non-conference slate with an 8-1-3 record. Georgia State head coach Brett Surrency also improved to 98 career victories, two shy of becoming the just second coach in program history to reach 100 career wins.

The Panthers jumped to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half of Tuesday's contest, as sophomore midfielder Logan Luque got the scoring started in the 25th minute when a beautiful through-ball from Ramon Munoz hit the Bonaire, Ga., native in stride who buried his first goal of the year.

Briggs tallied the next two scores for GSU, giving his team a two-goal advantage in the 31st minute after heading in a cross from Dylan Morris and weaving through the UAB defense just three minutes later, booting in his second goal of the night to put Georgia State ahead 3-0.

The assist was Morris' fourth of the season, tied for the second-most among all players in the Sun Belt.

UAB quickly responded with two goals of its own within a two-minute stretch, cutting the GSU lead to 3-2 at the half.

Georgia State continued to stay aggressive in the second half, eventually earning a penalty kick after sophomore forward Matthew Fearnley drew a foul inside the box. Briggs lined it up for his first PK of the season and fired a shot into the back of the net for his first career hat trick.

The Memphis, Tenn., native became just the third player in the Sun Belt to score three or more goals in a single match this season, joining Central Arkansas' Niklas Brodacki and Coastal Carolina's Sam Snaith. Briggs' three goals on Tuesday bumped his season total to 12, moving him ahead of Brodacki as the conference's top goal-scorer.

Georgia State ended the night with a 12-10 advantage in total shots and 6-2 edge in shots on target. Briggs led the Panthers with five shots and three on frame.

GSU is back in action 7 p.m. Saturday to host Central Arkansas for Senior Night at the GSU Soccer Complex.
