ATLANTA -- Georgia State quarterback
Dan Ellington was named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list for one of the week's top performances as he led the Panthers to bowl eligibility with their fourth straight victory, 52-33 over Troy.
Presented by the Davey O'Brien Foundation to the nation's best quarterback, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award. Each week of the college football season, the Great 8 list recognizes the top performances of the week, and the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week is announced on Tuesday.
Ellington, the senior from Olive Branch, Miss., accounted for four touchdowns in the win over Troy, two on the ground and two through the air.
He completed 18 of 25 passes for 189 yards with touchdown passes of 40 yards and four yards, and he rushed for scores of 19 yards and one yard.
Ellington directed the Panthers to 579 yards of total offense, including a school-record 390 yards rushing, and 52 points, equaling the school record for points against an FBS opponent.
For the season, he has passed for 1,771 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 512 yards and four scores.
Ellington leads the Sun Belt and ranks No. 16 in FBS in touchdown passes. He also ranks in the top three in the conference and the top 25 in the nation in total offense (285.4 yards per game) and completion percentage (.664).
Off to the best start in school history, the Panthers (6-2, 3-1 Sun Belt) are off this week before returning to action Nov. 9 at ULM (5 p.m. ET). Georgia State's next home game is Saturday, Nov. 16, when the Panthers host undefeated and nationally-ranked Appalachian State at 2 p.m. at Georgia State Stadium.
