ASHEVILLE, N.C.- The Georgia State men's soccer team earned its first win road win Wednesday night following a 3-2 overtime victory over UNC Asheville. Freshman Frank Rosenwald scored his first career goal to win the match for GSU.
The Panthers improved to 5-3 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 1-7.
UNC Asheville led Georgia State early in the match, with Zach Joens scoring in the first seven minutes of the match. The Panthers tried to even the score before the half, taking 10 shots, but none were on target and kept the Bulldogs up 1-0.
GSU came out of halftime in offensive mode, taking 16 shots in the second half. Redshirt-junior Salomon Lorenzano scored the first goal for the Panthers off an assist from Liam Fitzsimmons to tie the game in the 60th minute, but another Joens goal put the Bulldogs up 2-1 less than a minute later.
Sophomore Lukas Joyner scored his first goal this season off an assist from Lorenzano to tie the game again. Chris Katt made five saves to keep the Panthers out of the net again, forcing the match into overtime.
Rosenwald scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute of the match, ending the game just shy of double overtime. The freshman led the offense with eight total shots, four on target.
The Panthers had an impressive match offensively, outshooting the Bulldogs 29-26.
“It was great to see the team battle a tough UNC Asheville,” said head coach Brett Surrency. “We weren't very clinical tonight but we found a way to get it done in the end. I'm pleased that Frank scored his first career goal and I'm overall very proud of this group for giving it all they had.”
