Panthers Dominate South Alabama in Match Play Semis

* Top seed Georgia State earned a dominating 4-0-1 win over South Alabama in the Match Play Semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship on Wednesday at The Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
* On Tuesday, Georgia State earned a six-stroke win over Troy as Max Herrmann claimed low medalist honors in a three-man playoff.
* Georgia State will face No. 2 seed Troy starting at approximately 2 p.m. ET this afternoon.


MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – No. 1 seed Georgia State earned a dominating 4-0-1 win over No. 4 seed South Alabama on Wednesday morning in the Match Play Semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship and will advance to the afternoon to face either No. 2 Troy.

Sophomore Alexander Herrmann clinched the match with an up and down on the 16th hole, defeating Peter Staablo 3&2.

Earlier, senior JJ Grey earned a 6&5 win over Drew Cooke, closing out the match on the 13th hole to give Georgia State the first point. Sophomore Max Herrmann quickly followed with a 4&2 win over Brooks Rabren.

Freshman Nick Budd earned a 2 up win over Jason Mendel, while Nathan Mallonee was 2 up with three to play when the result was determined.

“Really proud of the way that the guys came out this morning,” head coach Joe Inman said. “They locked in early and set the pace of the matches. We have one more to go this afternoon to reach our ultimate goal for the championship.”

Since 1998, Georgia State has finished in the top three in the conference tournament all but three times with seven titles and six second-place finishes.

With a conference championship win, Georgia State will automatically earn a spot into NCAA Regional play which will be played May 16-18 at six national sites. Without a win, the Panthers will have to wait to see if they are selected as an at-large team. The NCAA championship is scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
