Ramirez Named GSU Tournament Student-Athlete of the Week

ATLANTA – Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez helped the women's tennis team claim the Sun Belt title this weekend with an impressive performance in New Orleans, earning her this week's GSU Tournament Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by the U.S. Marines.

Call her clutch. The 17-year old freshman clinched the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the Panthers. In the Championship match, Ramirez jumped to a quick 5-1 lead in the first set, but found herself locked into a 5-5 battle before she was able to secure the next two points to take the first set 7-5. In the second set, she led 2-1, but dropped the set 3-6.

As the final set was beginning, Timmermann lost her match on court one, putting the match score at 3-2, and Volejnicek was battling on court five.

Ramirez fought to a 6-5 lead in the final set and clinched the match for the Panthers 7-5 by returning the serve and forcing her opponent to hit into the net on the match point.

She also clinched the doubles points against No. 53 South Alabama in the final match and semifinal match against Troy.

The freshman from Merida, Venezuela went a perfect 3-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles this weekend.
