Georgia State will compete in Atlanta in the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23. GSU's opportunity to perform in front of family and friends in Atlanta will come at the George C. Griffin track beside the McCamish Pavilion at Fowler Street and 10th Street. Admission is free.
The 27-member GSU squad Friday morning at 11 a.m. with the hammer throw competition with five Panthers starting off. The remainder of Friday's events are in the evening, starting at 5 p.m. and going for four hours until 9 p.m. GSU will compete in Friday preliminaries in the 100m and 100m hurdles. Friday's six scored events will include the shot put, javelin, long jump, 3000m steeplechase, 1500m and 5,000m.
On Saturday, the field events start at 11a.m. with the high jump and at 1 p.m. with the discus. The running events start at 1 p.m. with the 4x100m relay and follow with the 800m, 100m hurdle finals, 100m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 200m and 4x400m relay.
This Georgia Tech Invitational field includes more than 20 Division I schools and a handful of non-Division I schools, but pre-registration saw entrants from Rutgers (Big Ten), St. John's (Big East), North Carolina (ACC), UAB (Conference USA), ETSU (SoCon), Furman (SoCon), Western Carolina (SoCon), Belmont (OVC), Jackson State (SWAC), UNC Asheville (Big South), Lipscomb (Atlantic Sun), Southeast Missouri (OVC), Elon, (CAA), Wofford (SoCon), LIU Brooklyn (NEC), Charleston Southern (Big South), Central Connecticut (NEC), Florida A&M (MEAC), host Georgia Tech (ACC), along with Georgia State (Sun Belt). Some non-Division I schools include Anderson (S.C.), Tiffin (Ga.), Tampa (Fla.) and Wingate (S.C.).
Georgia State's 2016 squad is led by a pair that were Sun Belt Championship Most Outstanding Performers last spring. Senior sprinter Ravin Gilbert leads the way in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, while junior thrower LaPorscha Wells paces that group in the shot put and hammer throw. Senior distance runner Stephanie Berger was all-conference in cross country. Junior hurlder Tyler Watson has the fastest 400m hurdle clocking in the conference, with Kassandra Pierre in the top five. Throwers Alysiah Whittaker and Tracy Dorcemont have won events this spring. Ashlan Rosier and Katherine Randolph have excelled in the long jump.
