BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - Georgia State's LaPorscha Wells set a school and a Sun Belt Championship record in winning the weight throw in the first event Friday.
Teammate Tracy Dorcemont finished third in the weight throw to score six more points for GSU, while Katherine Randolph set a school record in the indoor long jump in finishing sixth in the second championship event.
Stephanie Berger raced home in fourth place in the 3,000m run in 9:57.89 to score five points for the Panthers.
In the Distance Medley, Georgia State's team finished fourth to also add five points to the GSU first-day total. That quartet was Lindsay Shealy, Tyler Watson, Brianna Archer and Nuria Ramirez.
Georgia State stands second after day one with 29 points in the two-day Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
In qualifying events on Monday, GSU advanced Ravin Gilbert in both the 60m and 200m events. Gilbert clocked 7.40 to finish as the second seed, while being timed in 24.59 to earn the fourth seed. Jada Steward finished eighth in the 200m to advance the Tuesday's finals. In the 400m run, Sydney Davis sped around the track in 556.34 for the second-fastest qualifying time. In the 800m run, Nuria Ramirez ran 2:14.29 to have the fifth-fastest time in the eight-runner Tuesday field.
Wells, the junior from Augusta, Ga., threw the weight 20.06m (65-9 3/4) to break the SBC mark from 2012 by a Florida International thrower (19.78m) as well as topping her own school mark (19.32m, 63-4 3/4).
Dorcemont, the junior from Roswell, Ga., had a throw of 18.52m (60-9 1/4) to take third place.
Randolph, the senior from Flowery Branch, Ga., leaped 5.76m (18-10 3/4) to eclipse her previous indoor school record of 5.71m (18-9).
